Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

low back pain relief with chiropractic care

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a condition caused by compression of the bundle of nerves and arteries that passes through the shoulder. There are two main presentations of TOS: neurologic and vascular. Neurologic TOS is by far a more common presentation and typically responds very well to conservative chiropractic care in Gilbert AZ or Tempe AZ!

Common Causes of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome can be caused by a variety of factors. We have seen TOS occur from sports injuries, car accidents, pregnancy, repetitive stress, poor posture, or anatomical variants such as an additional rib in the cervical (neck) region. The root problem with TOS is that the brachial plexus, a bundle of nerves that controls all the muscles and sensation in your arm) is getting compressed. Most, if not all, of the TOS patient we see in our office suffer from muscle tightness and joint fixation in the neck and shoulder girdle that is causing or contributing to TOS.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Symptoms

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome can be identified by a few defining symptoms that you may experience including shoulder and/or neck pain, tinging, numbness, or weakness in the arm and hand, pale coloration of the fingers, and lack of endurance in the muscles of the arm. A proper evaluation at Axis Spine and Sport is necessary to determine the classification and source of TOS to treat the correct cause of the condition.

Treating Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

It is important to address Thoracic Outlet Syndrome if you believe you suffer from this condition as compressed nerves can progressively lose their function and cause permanent neurologic deficits. TOS can be treated by a combination of chiropractic adjustments to the fixated neck and shoulder, soft tissue therapy of the affected muscles, and specific exercises to rehabilitate good positioning of the structures surrounding the thoracic outlet. Your chiropractic team at Axis Spine and Sport in Gilbert AZ or Tempe AZ can create a comprehensive game plan to treat TOS and get you back to doing what you love, symptom-free!
